Tower Hamlets London Borough has rejected calls to establish a parish council for the Spitalfields area, in what would have been only the second local council in London. Councillors accepted a recommendation from Chief Executive Will Tuckley that proposals to set up or hold a referendum be rejected.
He told the full council meeting on Wednesday, 17th July: “There is not significant support for the creation of a parish council, either within the area or within the broader community. A parish would not be reflective of the identity and interests of the whole community.”
Just over 60 percent of Spitalfields residents who filled in a consultation had said they were not in favour of the parish council.
