SLCC Chair Adam Keppel-Green FSLCC, SLCC Vice Chair Helen Ball FSLCC, Chief Executive Rob Smith, and Head of Policy and External Communications Michael King, recently attended the Local Government Association’s (LGA) Annual Conference and Exhibition in Harrogate.
Together, they had an opportunity to meet with Baroness Taylor of Stevenage OBE, who is the Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (Lords Minister for Housing and Local Government), prior to a presentation she gave on ‘Debate Not Hate’. During her speech she made direct commitment to include SLCC and the National Association of Local Councils (NALC) as representatives of the local council sector in the work to review the Standards Regime and to work with us to develop the principles of Civility and Respect, in the context of Standards and of ‘Debate not Hate’.
Standards in local government, the potential introduction of virtual meetings in England, and the current state of public finances were the core topics under discussion, together with an exploration of the government’s intentions to drive reform through a forthcoming English Devolution White Paper, which we are awaiting eagerly.
At the conference, SLCC also shared an exhibition stand with our colleagues from NALC.
