An exciting opportunity has arisen to lead a small team dedicated to providing excellent services to the local community. There are currently 5 staff, plus a minimum of 4 in the café (more in the summer), as well as the clerk. The clerk is the overall line manager of all the other staff, although the Facilities Manager line manages the staff running the building, including the café. Machynlleth is a market town in North Powys with a population of around 2,300 and is diverse, bilingual and friendly. It has small, independent, mostly locally owned businesses. There is flourishing cultural life with live music and various large events hosted in the town, including the comedy festival. Machynlleth Town Council provides a wide range of services to the community, it runs the Plas and its grounds and is responsible for the public toilets, the town clock, the war memorial, two sets of allotments and the very successful weekly market. The Plas rents out office space, a large hall and other rooms for events and various activities. The council runs a café in the building. The grounds include areas leased to a local farmer, a football club, a rugby club, a community garden and a children’s nursery. It has a playground, one set of allotments, a pump track, a small astro turf pitch and a lot of trees.
The town clerk is expected to be fully involved in supporting the council to:
- Protect and improve the quality of life for the community and future generations
- Enhance the attractiveness of the town as a place in which to live, work, visit and invest
- Enhance the character and identity of the town
- Engage with the community to identify their needs, priorities and wishes
- Show due regard to advance equality of opportunity for all residents
Candidates must combine strong relevant technical knowledge and experience with effective leadership, management, influencing and communication skills. You will hold (or must obtain within 12 months) the Certificate in Local Council Administration.
