Government Announcement on New Powers for Community Regeneration in England

21 May 2024

The government has announced that new powers to help communities regenerate high streets and fill empty shops will come into force in England by the summer. The new powers will see a new local authority power, High Street Rental Auctions, “allow local leaders who know their area best to take control of empty properties blighting their high streets and rent them out to local businesses that want to use them.”

The powers will help councils to level up their high street and address issues stemming from vacant high street properties, such as low footfall leading to struggling businesses, increased unemployment, and anti-social behaviour.

The government is launching a ‘trailblazer’ programme to get High Street Rental Auctions up and running as soon as possible, as well as providing a £2 million pot to help communities implement these changes swiftly.
