If your council is considering moving over to a .gov.uk domain with the support of the Parish Council Domains Helper Service, we have an update on funding.
As you may know from previous communications, the Cabinet Office has secured funding to help councils with the initial cost of setting up a .gov.uk domain. This is a discount of £100 +VAT which is applied at the point of purchase by those Approved Registrars taking part in the Parish Council Domains Helper Service.
It’s important for councils to note that this funding can help a maximum of 1000 councils in their move to a .gov.uk domain, and is offered on a first-come first-served basis. Funding will run until March 2025. At this time, we are unable to say whether funding will be available for future years.
The aim is to make it easier for councils to move across to, and enjoy the benefits of, a .gov.uk domain. To this end, the project team will continue to look for ways to lower costs, and hope to share news about this in the future.
Important cost considerations for all councils
- Cabinet Office funding is available to:
- Funding can only be claimed via Approved Registrars taking part in the Parish Council Domains Helper Service. They will apply a discount of £100 +VAT at the point of purchase
- Funding is not designed to cover the whole cost of moving over to a .gov.uk domain:
- When moving over to a .gov.uk domain councils will need to budget for additional services, such as emails, a website and data migration depending on individual requirements
- A .gov.uk domain and all associated services are subscriptions and councils must factor these costs into their annual precept budget.
