Overview
Come along to this workshop to find out how to engage all of the people in your community to reduce their cost of living, get cosier homes, eliminate waste, and improve transport. They will save nature too. All this will help save the planet at the same time.
Where you have reluctant councillors, then you will find out how to engage them as well.
Once you are qualified you will be confident to deliver the message, and provide relevant training locally. The course covers everything from the basic science and its impact, the types of projects councils can roll-out (repair cafes, orchards, EV chargers, etc.), how to fund them and how to get buy-in.
You will also find out how to create a proper plan, with examples from other councils. Why re-invent the wheel? You will also learn to frame your communication to suit the audience in your parish / town / community.
It is based on the internationally renowned Carbon Literacy Project’s toolkit, which has been developed specifically for Parish and Town Councils. They will award you a certificate, provided you successfully complete their assessment. It will look great on your CV.
You can find out more about the reasons why being carbon literate is important in this Making the Case document and / or watch a recording of the Carbon Literacy Launch Event, delivered in March 2023 by The Carbon Literacy Project.
One Parish Clerk said “The Carbon Literacy Qualification delivered by Save Our Shropshire for the SLCC is simply inspirational and a must for all Clerks and Officers employed by Town and Parish Councils.”

“As Clerks we are in a unique position to do so much and to influence so many people. This is a brilliant course which I highly recommend. It was very interesting, informative and engaging, and provided me with the confidence and the resources to bring forward projects in a sustainable way. It has also given me the confidence to deal with issues around climate change and carbon management and to make the necessary changes.”
Julie Hawkins, Gillingham Town Council
“Excellent course that showed I really had not thought sufficiently about my own carbon footprint or how to encourage others to think about theirs.”
Jayne Smailes, Alvechurch Parish Council
“I am a parish councillor and was delighted to be able to share attendance with our parish clerk so we can work on this together. It was very relevant to both of our roles as we need to address this most important issue of our time in our parish. The course absolutely helps us to look at the complexities of the interlinked problems leading to the climate crisis and how to engage with our communities to address them urgently. We were given helpful strategies on how to engage with our parish in a positive way.”
Rachel Blackmore, Weston Turville Parish Council
