Overview
Agendas are the key tool for a successful meeting and minutes are a requirement at all local council meetings. This interactive course is designed for anyone who would like to acquire or improve their skills, knowledge and understanding of working effectively in meetings.
Recognise how best to prepare both agendas and minutes. Consider the best style and variations in content for agendas. Find out how to practice your skills of listening, note taking and writing. Understand the formalities and legal duties of minute taking, logging and signing.
These sessions last in the region of an hour each, but the trainer has offered to extend them if required (e.g. due to the number of questions received). Please therefore allow a little additional time to the hour stated.
These sessions are ideal for:
- New clerks
- Deputies
- Committee Managers
- Aspiring Administration Assistants
- Current clerks looking to refine their meeting skills or to acquire new techniques to further increase their effectiveness at meetings

“Since updating our agendas following your training session our meetings have changed for the better. Bringing the clerks report to the start of the meeting and tidying up the rest of the order has made meetings flow better, speeded them up and made them more productive. Thank you for improving the life of this clerk. I am certainly encouraging colleagues to take up refresher training (as this was for me) because it is so easy to get into bad habits.”
Jason Mawer, Clerk to Warfield Parish Council
“New and experienced clerks will benefit from this training, not only for its practical advice on agenda and minute writing but also for the clear and concise restatement of the legal and procedural requirements for the conduct of meetings.”
Jon Brumwell, Haughton Parish Council
