23 April 2019The Daily Telegraph reports that Transport Secretary, Chris Grayling, has written to highway authorities to remind them of 2016 guidance setting out that distances on traffic signs for highways should be in feet, yards and miles, after campaigners contacted him to complain of pedestrian route signs that only use metric measurements. Mr Grayling said councils were “legally obliged to stick to imperial measures for distance to avoid confusion.” “The beauty of our road signs is that they are easy to understand so motorists can concentrate on driving. Other signs should follow the same standards to avoid confusion,” he added.
