CSPL – Local Government Standards Roundtable

21 February 2025

Rob Smith, SLCC Chief Executive, attended a local government standards roundtable hosted by the Committee on Standards in Public Life (CSPL) yesterday. The event brought together local government experts, practitioners, and academics, to inform CSPL’s submission to the government’s ongoing consultation on strengthening the standards and conduct framework for local authorities in England. Rob said:

Pleased to attend a roundtable event to inform the CSPL’s submission to the government’s consultation on standards reform. Most importantly the committee was seeking our views on its 2019 report on ethical standards in local government (to which SLCC contributed extensively) and whether or not the report’s findings and recommendations were still current and valid. The roundtable was attended by a wide range of colleagues from organisations including the National Association of Local Councils (NALC), Local Government Association (LGA), Lawyers in Local Government (LLG), The Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA), National Audit Office (NAO), and principal authorities. It was encouraging and reassuring to see the wide support for standards reform across local government and particularly in relation to matters such as code of conduct and sanctions.
