The National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) has announced the winners of the Great British Market Awards at an event in Birmingham yesterday. Simon Baynes MP for Clwyd South and the Chairman of the All-Party Markets Parliamentary Group presented the awards. The winners were:

2022 Award Winners

• Britain’s Favourite Market – Bury Market
  Over 30,000 public votes were received online for this category and Bury Market came out on top!
• Best Local Council Market – Leighton Buzzard Market
  NAMBA noted “Local Councils are the growth membership for NABMA and this category has a winner with a market that dates back to the Doomsday Book. As well as traders standing in this market for over 40 years, it has recently launched a young trader’s scheme to encourage new entrepreneurs working with schools, Young Enterprise, the Prince’s Trust, and the National Market Traders Federation (NMTF).”
• Best Community Market – Traxx Market, Chapeltown, Sheffield
  The community project successfully saved a market which has served the community for almost 125 years. The site has been transformed and the market now focusses on street food and families.
• Best Large Indoor Market – Warrington Retail Market
  This new market was praised for innovation in design and operating, quality food and drink provision, and creating a regeneration opportunity supporting the revival of the town centre.
• Best Small Indoor Market – Freeman Street Market, Grimsby
  The 150 year old market was applauded for forging new connections and partnerships, including hosting many successful start-up businesses. It was noted that the quirky trading environment generates interest and footfall within its town centre and the market has a strong social media presence.
• Best Large Outdoor Market (Two Winners)
  – Ridley Road Market – London Borough of Hackney
  The market promoted standards and innovation being regarded as a beacon across the city of London. The award-winning markets team was credited with transforming the market along with its reputation, including successful engagement with young people.
  – York Shambles Market
  The highly popular market is located in a traditional location having a wide appeal to local residents and tourists alike. The market has put in a lot of effort to restore a quality market reputation, boasting many excellent businesses and has re-established itself as a result.
• Best Small Indoor Market – Thornaby Market
  The market is fully occupied and has an effective social media presence linking with the community and local education providers. Their innovative rental incentive scheme was singled out by the judges as was the proactive implementation of their market plan.
• Best Large Speciality Market – Stratford upon Avon Victorian Christmas Market
  The market is held annually with over 300 stalls located in the town centre. The four-day event has many stakeholders including the town and district councils and the local business improvement district. Footfall significantly increases, supporting the local economy.
• Best Small Speciality Market – Columbia Road Flower Market – Tower Hamlets
  The weekly Sunday market began in 1869 with visitors, customers, and tourists travelling from far and wide to visit. It increases foot fall with businesses opening on a Sunday to take advantage of the market visitors.
• Best Large Food Market – Borough Market – Southwark
  This market has over 150 traders, being run by a charitable trust. NAMBA noted “It has a thousand years of history and is regarded a source of quality British and international produce with a reputation as Britain’s most renowned food market.”
• Best Small Food Market – Doncaster Fish Market
  The market is one of the largest dedicated fish markets in the country and has eight independent fish mongers. It is well known for its quality and affordability.
• Best Market Attraction – Belfast Christmas Market
  The specialist market is delivered within a community of historic unrest. The market has dealt with Covid, issues relating to Brexit and its EU traders, and also with the Northern Ireland protocol. During these challenging times, the operator supported and advised its traders.
