It was announced in the lead up to Christmas that the government has made temporary arrangements so that employees can now self-certify sickness for up to 28 days, as against 7 days currently.
They only need to attend their GP for a fit note when they have been sick for more than 28 days. This includes non-working days such as weekends and Bank Holidays.
This is intended to assist GP’s in relieving the burden of addressing the Omicron variant for the next few weeks. Please note that it applies to sick leave commencing between 10 December 2021 and 26 January 2022.
