On 21 July 2021, Robert Jenrick MP, announced the decision, subject to Parliamentary approval, on the proposals to create unitary authorities from 1 April 2023.
For Cumbria, the proposal is for two unitary councils – an East unitary council covering the existing areas of Barrow, Eden and South Lakeland and a West unitary council covering the existing areas of Allerdale, Carlisle and Copeland.
For North Yorkshire, the proposal is for a single unitary council for the whole of the existing administrative county of North Yorkshire.
For Somerset, the proposal is for a single unitary council replacing Mendip District, South Somerset, Sedgemoor and Somerset West & Taunton.
