There has been some confusion over the local Government sector involvement in light of the recent announcement by the Chancellor of a pay freeze for public sector staff, with the exception of staff on less than £24,000, who would receive a £250 payment.
The Local Government Employers have clarified that the Government has no formal role around the decisions in these pay negotiations and it will be “business as usual” in 2021/22. Any change to that position would involve legislation by the Government.
This means also that the increase of £250 for those on less than £24,000 (the national median wage) does not automatically apply. The cost of this alone is estimated to be £100 Million.
The pay claims from the unions are expected early in the new year for negotiations to commence.
