SLCC Chief Executive Rob Smith has today written to The Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities & Local Government and his Welsh counterpart Julie James AM Minister for Housing and Local Government in a bid to highlight the significant financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic on local authorities in England and Wales.
Since the Localism Act 2011, local authorities have been encouraged by central government to take on services and assets once provided by principal authorities and many have done so in an effort to retain services for their communities. Recent events have therefore had an impact beyond the scale of anything that local councils had planned or budgeted for. The letter asks that the money provided to support local government also includes town, parish and community councils and does not stop at principal authorities. The SLCC will continue to lobby on behalf of all our members and will keep you updated.
